Washing Baby Car Seat Covers Safely and Correctly

Most parents like baby car seat covers because they can add some attitude or personality to their baby's carseat. Since they come in a lot of different designs and fabrics, they can really personalize your infant's carseat. However, like most things dealing with your little one, they will tunnel car wash equipment probably get dirty and require cleaning at some point. Infant carseat covers are generally easier to clean than the original padding in your car seat because they are removable. But while your first instinct may be to just throw them in the washing machine, here's a few reasons you should read the tag before doing so:
First, some covers have memory foam in them. This foam isn't meant to be washed and dried. By washing and drying so, you you're really taking a chance in ruining the foam. With these types you're better off wiping with a damp washcloth and some soap. This way you won't risk morphing and distorting the memory foam as you'll minimize the amount of water that comes in contact with the baby seat.
Next, if you do decide to wash your car seat covers, make sure you put the covers back on the base while they are still wet. If you don't they will be more difficult to put on later as they will be less stretchy. While this won't affect the safe use of your infant car seat cover, it will save you from frustration. There's nothing more frustrating than trying to fit a cover that's too small onto car seat.
Finally, washing and drying certain car seat covers can remove all of the flame retardant material in them. This material is designed to protect your baby if there is a crash that results in your car catching on fire. While of course this hopefully never happens, in the event it does, washing and drying this material might remove the material that could help save your child's life. Don't take this risk because one day you might need the flame resistant material.
So before you decide to throw that dirty car seat cover in the washing machine, be sure to think twice. Doing that can really lead to some damage to some of the safety features in your covers.
